What a coincidence....I have been in the same delima since buying a 93 TT with 34,000 miles... ;-) ! Anyway, was wondering what that nasty, waxy residue was in MY engine bay...otherwise cleaner than yours. But I bought a can of Gunk Engine Brite, some Goof Off, and with a tooth brush and some rags, it's looking better. The gassy, petroleum smell has taken a while to go away, but that's probably because I didn't over do it with the water rinse. Don't get too obsesed with cleaning however, you'll wind up making a career out of it!!!
